DOMAINE CHATAIGNERAIE-LABORIER Pouilly Fuisse 'LA ROCHE' (2008)   Chardonnay

Organic production.

The parcel of La Roche lies on the South East of the rock of Vergisson, in the highest vineyards of the village. The vines are over 40 years old and situated on stony limestone soils.

There is a very special micro-climate here that imparts a very special quality to the wine. Fermentation and ageing takes place in 1-7 French barrels with long lees contact to enhance the richness.

La Roche is a wine capable of ageing well, yet the chalky minerality, the subtlety and its complexity means it can be enjoyed even when young.

J.P. ROBINOT Jasnieres 'LUMIERE DE SILEX' (2004)   Chenin Blanc

J.P. ROBINOT Jasnieres 'LUMIERE DE SILEX' (2004)

Organic production

A lovely honied, wild flower nose - fresh fruit, crisp almost wild meadow like character. This follows onto the pallet which is rich and complex but all the senses compliment each other - nothing sticks out of line. Very long and intriguing finish.

DOMAINE RICARD Touraine "?" (2008)   Sauvignon Blanc

DOMAINE RICARD Touraine "?" (2008)

? - is the name of the cuvee, not a misprint. This wine is from 70 year old vines, very small density and aged in new oak for 12 months. Whilst not usually being a fan of wines from new oak - particularly white ones, this cuvee really caught our attention.

The Sauvignon still shows its nettle green unctuousness, but it also has an appealing oily characteristic. This is a powerful wine with just a hint of sweetness to the fruit and wood. Quite an imaginative use of both grape and barrel.

DOMAINE JOBLOT Givry 'PIEDS DE CHAUME' (2006)   Chardonnay

"This is quite ripe, indeed with exotic fruit notes that transition into, forward, textured and delicious flavors that display a hint of wood on the solidly long, sappy and dry finish. Pretty though without the depth that I usually see in this wine, at least at this point." - Allen Meadows 'Burghound.com'.

J. P. ROBINOT Loir 'SYMPHONIE DU TEMPS' (2003)   Chenin Blanc

J. P. ROBINOT Loir 'SYMPHONIE DU TEMPS' (2003)

Very nosey, very full on the nose. Ripe but nicely balanced. It's actually quite easy on the palate but ripe and voluptuous as well. A real impressive body one of the best white 03's from the Loire we've tried.

Maybe easier introduction for Chenin Blanc beginners?

J. P. ROBINOT Loir 'CHARME DU LOIR' (2005)

Quite a broad, rich example of Chenin on the nose, some straw and even tobacco notes.

Masculine and sensible on the palate with more of that lovely richness. This wine has a real sense of place and time. An experience!

VIGNOBLES GUILLAUME Franche Comte 'RESERVE COLLECTION' (2004)   Chardonnay

As with the Reserve Pinot Noir this book must not be judged by its cover. It recently acheived the Chardonnay trophy in the Top 100 Vins de Pays awards. This is what they said...

"Chardonnay grapes from 38 year old vines grown in mineralic clay soils overlooking the Saone plain. Burgundian honey, butter and peach nose. Palate showing good development with peachy fruit and minerality. Good concentration and acidity"

DOMAINE JOBLOT Givry 'CLOS DE SERVOISINE' 1er cru (2006)   Chardonnay

"...the most elegant white with very fresh notes of grapefruit and melon that serve as a pretty introduction to the rich, intense and moderately wooded, textured and detailed flavors brimming with dry extract and fine length on the mineral-infused finish. Lovely potential for a year or two of cellar time."  - Allen Meadows 'Burghound.com'.

J.P. ROBINOT Loir 'L'IRIS DU LOIR (2004)   Chenin Blanc

J.P. ROBINOT Loir 'L'IRIS DU LOIR (2004)

An almost sherry like dry, steely richness. But some broad depth behind - finesse, some soft honied fruit. Very elegant with that beautiful rich/savoury interplay. Exciting and intriguing

DOMAINE MATROT Meursault (2004)   Chardonnay

Chirpy nutty, green streaks with some gentle creamy notes to soothe. A punchy, crisp affair with fresh lime fruit throughout particularly on the long nutty finish. Very classical.

DOMAINE DES MALANDES Chablis 'MONTMAINS' 1er cru (2008) magnum   Chardonnay

DOMAINE DES MALANDES Chablis 'MONTMAINS' 1er cru (2008) magnum

A very crisp, hard mineral edge to this wine. Quite powerful really with hints of old wood use and a salty, mineral intensity.

A very different style from the straight Chablis, but a cracking example.
