LES VIGNOBLES MONTAGNAC 'Les Terres Rouges' (2009) Picpoul de Pinet
100% Picpoul
A relatively unknown style of wine in the UK, this is produced in the flat lands on the costal side of Montpellier. Very distinctive, with a lovely balance between fresh, crunchy minerality and soft, ripe exotic fruit. The locals drink this with seafood and it makes a great alternative to Muscadet.
DOMAINE LA HAUT FEVRIE Muscadet de Sevre et Maine (2007) Melon de Bourgogne
A delightfully refreshing, uncomplicated Muscadet.
Fresh citrus notes, clean & crisp with a hint of sea salt minerality.
Pop in a cold ice bucket for that perfect 'pick me up' on a hot day.
ST JOHN Vin de Pays de Cotes de Gascogne BLANC (2007) Sauvignon/Colombard/Ugni Blanc/Chardonnay/Gros Manseng and Petit Manseng
A crisp, crunchy, fresh white from the South West of France. The fruit is enjoyably ripe, exotic and fruity but it retains a lovely refreshing green apple acidity.
DOMAINE DE LA PRADE MARI Vin de Pays d'Oc BLANC (2008) Viognier
A peachy, voluptuous richness is balanced nicely by quite an elegant, light, floral freshness with hints of gingerbread to follow. A fine example of the Viognier grape.
DOMAINE LA COLOMBETTE Plume Blanc 9%abv Chardonnay
CHATEAU DE ROQUEFORT Cotes du Provence 'LES GENETS' (2008) HALF BOTTLE Clairette, Vermentino
Plush ripe fruit with a velvety luscious feel. The sunshine drips out of this wine but it still retains its crisp, crunchiness.
So moreish.
DOMAINE BOUDAU Vin de Pays de Cotes Catalanes SEC (2008) Muscat
Light, fresh, floral, elegant Muscat notes of lychee, blossom and citrusy fruits. It is well balanced by a nice crisp acidity and has a soft velvety peach quality.
ERIC TEXIER Cotes du Rhone BLANC (2008) Grenache Blanc, Clairette, Roussanne
DOMAINE LA HAUTE FEVRIE Muscadet de Sevre et Maine 'EXCELLENCE' (2007) Melon de Bourgogne
A perfect example of what Muscadet should be.
Crisp mineral notes but also equally balanced with a limey quite elegant fruit.
This estate still harvests by hand, ensuring the fruit is brought in in the best possible condition.
DOMAINE RICARD Touraine 'LE PETIOT' (2009) Sauvignon Blanc
Very crisp, grassy, green Sauvignon charateristics. Really fresh and precise. This is such an impressive show of the grape and the region at any price let alone this one.
Serious stuff.
DOMAINE LA HAUT FEVRIE Muscadet de Sevre et Maine 'LES GRAS MOUTONS' (2007) Melon de Bourgogne
From a parcel of old vines on quite special amphibolite rock.
Intense minerality on the nose - a real stony quality gives the impression that this could be incredibly lean. But on the palate there is remarkable richness and depth. Some very enjoyable fruit behind all that salty mineral particularly on the long intense finish.
Superb.
DOMAINE DES ROY Touraine BLANC (2008) Sauvignon
Very traditional Loire style Sauvignon Blanc. Crunchy, mineral with suggestions of grapefruit and blackcurrant leaves. More subtle then Domaine Ricard's example. A nice green apple note on the long refreshing finish.
GERARD METZ Alsace 'LA TRADITION' (2008) Riesling
Light, citrusy, floral notes on the nose. Crisp crunchy apples over the top.
This has a lovely lively, fresh crunch on the palate with nice mineral overtones. Not a deep oily Riesling example but for this price it has really good pure fruit.
GERARD METZ Alsace 'LA TRADITION' (2008) Gewurztraminer
Light, fresh citrusy notes - very fruity with that tell tale gewurz lychee, aromatic blossom character.
Very easy, fresh and fruity without suffering from that over unctuous oiliness that can be associated with this grape.
LOUIS CHENU PERE & FILS Bourgogne (2008) Aligote
The 'other' white grape of Burgundy - and so often (and quite deservedly) given bad press.
This is a fresh, citrus lemon, nicely crisp white. It has a bit of back bone and even a bit of weight later in the palate. Easily as good as many Chardonnay at this price - in fact better then a lot.
